Bae Joo Hyun (born March 29, 1991), professionally known by her stage name Irene, is a South Korean singer, television host and actress born in Daegu, South Korea. She is the leader and visual of the girl group Red Velvet which debuted in August 2014.

Biography[]

2009-13: Pre-debut activities as a SM Rookie[]

Irene was recruited by S.M. Entertainment as a trainee in 2009 at the age of 18 and trained there for five years until her debut in Red Velvet.[1] Prior to her debut she was introduced to the public as one of the agencys SM Rookies and appeared in labelmate Henrys music video for "1-4-3 (I Love You)" in August 2013.[2]

2014-present: Red Velvet and solo activities[]

After training under S.M. Entertainment for five years, Irene debuted on August 01, 2014 with two other SM Rookies, Wendy and Seulgi and unknown trainee Joy, as Red Velvet with the single "Happiness".[3] In November of the same year, she appeared in Kyuhyuns music video for "At Gwanghwamun".[4]

In July 2016 Irene made her acting debut as the leading role Areum in the web drama series "The Female Employees of a Game Company". Irene has been receiving positive reviews for her acting such as she is “carrying out [her role] with skill”.[5] On October 14 Irene became a official host of OnStyle's fashion show Laundry Day.[6] In the same month, she became a fixed panelist on the KBS show "Trick and True" with band mate Wendy.[7]
