Happiness is the debut single release by Red Velvet, S.M. Entertainments first girl group that debuted in five years after f(x) in 2009. The single was released on August 04, 2014 but was already performed starting on August 01, 2014.
Background[]
S.M. Entertainment released the music video teaser for "Happiness" on July 27, 2014.[1] The track is described as being an "urban Europop song with a strong synth sound and an African tribal beat".[2]
The lyrics tell everyone to love themselves and enjoy the small happy moments that one finds throughout life while spreading positive energy.
Music Video[]
In the beginning of the music video, there are several S.M. Entertainment trainees hidden in the background. One of them was Yeri, Red Velvets fith member. She joined the group in May 2015 for the comback with "Ice Cream Cake".[3]
Controversy[]
Shortly after the release of the music video, Japanese media, including Yahoo News, reported that there were images referencing the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks. S.M. Entertainment responded to the reports, explaining, "After questioning the director, we found that he simply used a collage source for the images, and there was no intention behind it."[4][5]
Following the reports, the agency removed the original music video and uploaded an edited version on their official Youtube Channel.
