Gong Minji (born January 18, 1994), professionally known as Minzy, is a South Korean singer born in Seoul, South Korea. She was a member of the girl group 2NE1, formerly signed under YG Entertainment.

Minzy left 2NE1 in April 2016 and YG Entertainment on May 05 the same year when her contract ended. Shortly after on May 16, she signed an exclusive contract with The Music Works as an solo artist.[1]

Early life[]

Dara was born as Gong Minji on January 18, 1994 in Seoul, South Korea. She is the granddaugther of famous folk dancer Gong Ok Jin. When she was young her family moved to Gwangju. During that time Minzy participated in many dance competitions, winning various awards.

A video of her dancing at a contest was uploaded on the internet and YG Entertainments CEO Yang Hyuk Suk personally contacted and recruited her to join the agency after he had seen the video. At that time she was just an elementary student.[2]

2009-16: Being a part of 2NE1[]

In May 2009 Minzy debuted as part of YG Entertainments first girl group 2NE1 with the debut single "Fire". At that time she was just 15 years old and the youngest member.
