Lifted is the official US debut single by South Korean singer CL, the former leader of the girl group 2NE1. It was released digital-only on August 19, 2016 accompanied by a music video.

Background[]

The second teaser photo, posted on August 18, 2016 revealed that "Lifted" was produced by Teddy and co-written by him, CL and Asher Roth.[1] It is a hip-hop song which incorporates elements of reggae fusion. "Lifted" heavily samples "Method Man" by Wu-Tang Clan.[2]

CL performed the song live for the first time on The Late Late Show with James Corden on September 15, 2016.[3]

Critical reception[]

Tamar Herman from Billboard states that the song "diverges sharply from CL’s image as one of South Korea’s most prominent female rappers and eschews her typical aggressive style. Referencing drugs and liquor liberally while roaming around New York City, this isn’t the same CL that K-pop fans are used to. Built for listening to on a hazy summer day, “Lifted” takes a step back from CL’s typical raps, aside from a quick bit at the beginning of the song".[4]

Music Video[]

The music video was shot in New York, USA and directed by Dave Meyers. It features a cameo appearance by Method Man.[5]
